The Psychotherapeutic Employment of Sacred Plants .Parts 1

 by Silvia Polivoy

The human being shows a remarkable disposition to seek spiritual transcendence.

Since the irrational cannot be erased from the human mind, the harder we try to deny it, the greater the power it will exert upon us. The spiritual experiences are associated to the occurrence of altered states of consciousness (ASC).

The society we live in considers (as opposed to shamanic knowledge) modified states of consciousness to be onanistic and vicious. Shamans argue that to satisfy our religious drive we have to experience the divine, and in order to achieve that, they use sacred plants. That is why the sacred plants are called entheogens, because they help experience the divine.

Abraham Maslow called these experiences "peak experiences", but they are not limited to the altered states achieved through drugs or sacred plants. They can take place during meditation, hyperventilation, the practice of yoga, hypnosis, fast, physical suffering (such as the self-inflicted pain some saints underwent or the postures certain yoguis kept for months, etc). In short, it is a state that can be reached in many ways and, once there, we can explore aspects of reality which are different from those perceived in an ordinary state of consciousness. These different aspects of reality are well studied.

The orthodox branch of science considers these altered states subjective, therefore worthless. Then, these feelings of ecstasy, these other "dimensions" of reality, these occurrences of mystical reunion, of beauty, this crossing of the space-time barrier, can be catalogued as pathological. Traditional Psychiatry does not separate mysticism from psychosis. That is why Transpersonal Psychology blends science with the study of the spiritual capabilities of man using methods to alter the state of consciousness, because the spiritual phenomena seem to be incomprehensible in an ordinary state of consciousness.

Modified states of consciousness may have a dangerous side because, since they affect the defense mechanisms of the individual, they may pave the way for unacceptable, repressed material from the individual´s past to the conscious mind and cause restlessness, which could rise to terrifying levels if the individual is unable to cope with his anxiety (this is what is usually known as a "bad trip"). That is why previous psychological counseling is advised, for the individual to be able to tell what comes from the outside from what comes from the inside. It is recommended, also, to experience such modified states of consciousness in the context of psychotherapy, under the supervision of qualified, well trained proffesionals.

But, in spite of the risks, the spiritual experiences, the unconscious material, and the altered amplified of consciousness related to them, are too valuable to be ignored. Thus psychotherapy takes advantage of the information, available when the repression mechanism is weak, to modify unwanted patterns of behaviour.

Most psychoactive substances resemble (and sometimes are identical to) substances normally produced by the human body. Therefore, the individual has a built-in capacity to experiment psychedelic states, which are inherent to certain aspects of the human mind inaccessible during wakefulness. So, under the appropriate circumstances, these substances allow the individual (for a limited period of time) to gain access to deeper parts of his psyche.

Through dreams we get in touch with those aspects of our personality which are hidden from the conscious mind. The entheogenic or psychointegrative plants help reach those states that we experience while dreaming or while in the middle of those rare, ecstatic epiphanies that can happen while we are awake. Unlike most drugs, entheogenic plants do not produce physical dependence. A quick, time-limited tolerance (that does not increase with the dose administered) is also characteristic.

Their main use is to spot the individual’s conditionings and destroy them, to be unselfish by dissolving momentarily the limits of the ego, to expand the inner vision, to be more lucid, obtaining in that fashion very important insights. In short, to be able to recognize the forces, the impulses behind the individual’s actions and emotions, to track thoughts back to their source and to be in control of one´s life. That´s why they help the individual to become one.

Due to all this the sacred plants are called psychointegrative, or entheogenic. The list includes Ayahuasca, Peyote, Psilocybin mushrooms, San Pedro (a cactus), Epena, Cebil, Brugmansia, among others.

Abraham Maslow in his book called "The psychology of Science" has shown how science might be the best neurotic defense mechanism invented by man, because the selective rejection wielded by human knowledge acts as a defense and therefore constitutes a neurotic maneuver which, out of fear, disqualifies transpersonal experiences as objects of study.

We´d all benefit if science became an open sistem oriented to personal growth.

Modern physics teaches us about the Universe´s unity, in which consciousness plays a role much closer to the one described by the great mystics.

When we transcend the ego, we begin to heal.

WHY SOME PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL EXAMS CAN BE A SHAM OR A SCAM"

http://www.ohsinc.com

Your workers’ compensation costs are soaring!  What can you do?  In a panic you call the nearest occupational health clinic and ask the Doc., “What can I do?” With a matter-of-fact and confident tone, the doctor recommends a “pre-placement physical exam” for all your new-hires.  Doc assures you that a $45 - $65 physical exam will “ensure” that you are hiring fit and healthy people.  Doc then adds,”…and if you really want to be certain, for another $40 - $50, I can do some functional capacity (strength) testing for your general laborers, and, for your clerical positions, I can do some nerve impulse testing (for carpal tunnel syndrome)”.

In other words, just pay the doctor and clinic $100-$120 or more per each of your new-hires and you will be able to find out who is fit to work and who is not.  Baloney.  For the most part, clinic pre-employment physical exams are a sham and a scam!
Why?  Unfortunately, with today’s HMO-PPO climate in medicine, hungry health care providers and medical clinics are capitalizing on the fears of employers.  Clinics are running up big bills for fancy exams and special physical tests for new-hires that are of little to no value except to them (the providers) as a more lucrative income stream.
In recent years some new “wrinkles” have been added to the physical examination process and marketed as “breakthrough” technologies that identify persons who are most apt to develop specific injuries or have an inability to perform the job adequately.  Again, that’s baloney.  They are all but useless in accomplishing that!
Here are five (5) of the more commonly used “forecasting” techniques, along with only a limited discussion of their usefulness (or lack of)...
Faulty Forecasting Technique #1-  CLINICAL PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
Very rarely is a previously undiagnosed or unknown physical impairment “discovered” by a physical examination.  It is a well-established medical fact that the most accurate method for determining the likelihood of future injury of illness is based on an individuals historical (health history) evidence. If a physical impairment exists at all, it is much more likely to be found on the health history (NOT the actual physical exam) portion of the physical.
Today, on virtually all basic clinical exam forms, this vital health history is NOT detailed nor is it specifically designed to uncover available information that is truly useful.
Faulty Forecasting Technique #2-  LUMBAR (BACK) X-RAYS
In fact, most persons with low back pain have “normal” X-rays!  AND, most people with spinal abnormalities that appear in an X-ray do NOT have back problems!  The American College of Radiology and the College of Occupational Medicine have both publicly rejected the usefulness of X-rays for this application.  Additionally, this unnecessary exposure to radiation can be dangerous.
Faulty Forecasting Technique #3-  FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY (STRENGTH) TESTING
Extensive studies indicate very little correlation between the results of “strength testing” and the probability of later injury to the individual being strength-tested.  The actual “strength” test at a clinic simply confirms ONE thing:  whether or not the individual can lift “that” much weight that “one” time (on that one day, at that one time/date).   It does NOT measure the individual’s endurance capabilities in lifting “that” same weight (e.g., 10, 30, or 100 times) in any given day.  As importantly, it does NOT predict the long-term physical or health impact on that specific individual as a result of any repetitive effort in lifting “that” same amount of weight they “proved” that they could lift (“once”) during their clinical strength test!  All in all, there is NO scientific validity to the information gathered by this all but useless and expensive examination.  Why even pay to have them done on your new-hires?
Faulty Forecasting Technique #4-  LABORATORY ANALYSIS
Abnormal findings from laboratory analysis (blood work-up, urinalysis) are rare in an individual not previously experiencing symptoms.  Again, why even pay to have that done on your new-hires?
Faulty Forecasting Technique #5-  WORK SIMULATION TESTING
Work simulation will measure ability at the present moment (usually while the applicant is exerting maximum effort- they do want the job, after all!).  Like “strength testing”, it does not measure endurance, which is intrinsically necessary for a useful assessment of the worker.
THEREFORE...AS AN EMPLOYER, HOW SHOULD YOU PROCEED TO BEST ENSURE THAT EMPLOYEES ARE “PHYSICALLY FIT” TO PERFORM A PARTICULAR JOB?
Fortunately there is a very viable option.  Earlier, we referenced the accepted medical fact that 90%+ of all diagnoses are made based on historical (health history) evidence.  Considerable research has been carried out in the field of worker injury and illness.  Board-certified authorities in occupational medicine – including our own Dr. Michael Wald at OHS - have been able to identify several health history factors which predispose an individual to future disability.  Among others, these factors include past surgical intervention, past neurological involvement, past pain episodes, past repetitive or prolonged disabling events, and past psychosocial attitudes and behavior.
In other words, a specifically designed health history questionnaire based on these multiple, pertinent factors in the applicant's PAST is the answer to a more meaningful and useful evaluation for pre-placement decisions.  A more in-depth and comprehensive health-history from your new-hire will also provide you with the most useful assessment information available to identify persons at probable risk for future disabling illness or injury.
This type of risk assessment system, in addition to documenting past medical incidents, can also prognosticate what is recognized as “chronic disability syndrome” (sometimes referred to as “delayed recovery syndrome”).  This syndrome, alone, could be responsible for the largest percentage of your workers’ compensation claims.  Employees experiencing delayed recovery may do so intentionally or not, but, in a specially designed health history questionnaire, very specific “red flags” can be identified to alert employers in advance.  Employers can then implement early intervention in a case and affect earlier employee recovery, earlier return of function, and an earlier return to work by the employee-  RESULTING IN A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN TOTAL COSTS OF EMPLOYEE REHABILITATION.
What is both exciting and enticing about utilizing this type of worker risk assessment system is its comparative ease of use and relative inexpensive cost.  For companies with multiple locations there is the added advantage of uniformity and consistency in physical assessment results, since all results are funneled through and analyzed by one source (OHS) and supervised by one Nationally Board Certified Occupational Health Physician.  That consistency is impossible when, instead, you are working with multiple clinics and multiple physicians with multiple interpretations of findings.
The worker risk assessment questionnaire can be completed by the employee at the time of hiring and evaluated by a specifically educated occupational physician according to established occupational medicine protocols and A.D.A. considerations.  There is no need to refer the applicant to a medical clinic unless there are specific indications for doing so, as determined from the assessment.
Further, when the risk profile is analyzed against a properly described job analysis (one listing the job’s “essential” functions) it can serve as documentation to measure the extent of any “restriction” or "reasonable accommodation” needed.  Those of you knowledgeable about the Americans with Disability Act (A.D.A.) will recognize this very obvious advantage in making hiring or placement decisions that are legally defensible.

Does Employment Discrimination Exis for guys

by Gail S. Bernstein, Ph.D.

Question: Is it true that people can be fired for being gay or lesbian or bisexual? I saw that commercial on Ellen's coming out show and just couldn't believe it. It can't be fair to fire people for who they are. Why should my boss care as long as I do a good job? I've just come out in the last year and this makes me want to go back in.
I'm afraid that employment discrimination exists in far too many places. In May of 1997 Maine passed a law making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in employment, housing, credit and public accommodations. That brings the number of states that provide similar protection to 10. The others are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin. In addition some cities and counties in the other 40 states offer protection.
A similarly uneven picture exists worldwide. Some countries are far more restrictive than the U.S. while others are more open.
What's legal isn't always fair, which is the reason people often band together to press for changes in existing laws. Slavery certainly isn't fair, and it used to be legal in this country. Prohibiting women from voting isn't fair either, but it also was illegal for many years. Outlawing certain religions is unfair, but has been and sometimes still is illegal.
There's still far too much prejudice out there against people who are lesbian or gay or bisexual, and part of coming out is learning how that prejudice may affect your life. It's a sobering realization. What makes it bearable for many people is the recognition that being honest about who you are is a whole lot easier way to live than hiding in order to be accepted.
I hope you'll find the positive aspects of coming out make up for downsides like employment discrimination

All small businesses, no matter the state they are located in, are required to pay taxes for unemployment (state unemployment taxes, or SUTA for short). The rates and the maximum amount the business will pay are different depending upon your state’s rules. Unfortunately for the employer, these taxes are charged directly to him and cannot be passed on to the employee. The amount charged is calculated based on a percentage of the wage an employee is due, and off the experience rate of your company. Usually the new company will start with a higher rate and can have this adjusted as each year goes on.

However, if the new company experiences layoffs or downsizing, the rate may increase to the maximum amount or cutoff. Each state has different SUTA cutoffs with different minimum and maximum rates. Taxes at this time are reported quarterly and paid directly to the state. So, knowing that small businesses can be adversely affected when losing employees, we would like to show how PEOs can smooth out the cost increase if you happen to find yourself in this position in today’s declining economy.
