Created by: Aby Yusuf Mardhiono (AYM)

Terkadang kita terlewat beribadah dikarenakan kepadatan aktivitas sehari-hari.
  • Membahagiakan Kedua Orang Tua

Five Lethal Job-Hunting Mistakes

Job-hunting takes enthusiasm, concentration and a great attention to detail - not to mention an effervescent manner (even if that's not your usual nature) and infinite patience. As long as you're expending so much energy on getting a new job, you'd hate to think any of that exertion might be wasted. But these five job-search missteps can knock you out of the game - watch out for them! employee
1) Using a juvenile email address or phone message.
Now is the time to ditch that "partygirl109" or "buffdudexx7" email address, immediately. Get a free email account from hotmail, and come up with an adult-sounding handle. Same goes for your voicemail: get rid of the cute kids'-voice messages and funny Groucho Marx tapes. This is for real.
2) Using an electronically challenged resume.
Get your resume in shape, in three versions: hardcopy (looking professional, fitting the page, and printed on decent paper); plain text, to be sent in the body of an email message; and a Word document, likewise printable and readable and formatted to the page. A junky resume leaves a terrible impression. job vacancy indonesia
3) Skipping the research.
As soon as you apply for a job online or via a print ad - or a friend, for that matter - do at least enough research to know what business the company is in, who its competitors are and where it does business. If the phone rings and you're clueless as to the company's business priorities, don't expect to fare well on a phone interview.
4) Being hard to reach.
If there was ever a time to keep your cell phone charged up, it's when you're job-hunting. NEVER leave a work number (unless it's your own company) or a friend or relative's number on a voice message for a prospective employer. Use your own numbers, and return calls promptly - same day, if you can. vacancy
5) Lying on your resume.
It's terribly easy for employers to discover falsifications on your resume, and it won't matter how long you've been with the company when the truth comes out: if you lied, you're fried. Tell the truth.

With Your Next Job, Have a Love Affair!

What do you do when you're looking for a potential mate? Go to the gym, go out on dates, go places you like. Ask around to see who's still single or newly single. Think about the time and energy you devote to dating, which if successful, will comprise maybe 20% of your waking hours. Now think about your career. You probably spend about 50% of your waking hours at your desk, commuting, or traveling for work vacancy
When we're dating, we're very specific and choosy about whom we'll spend 20% of our time with. Yet often times, we settle for the first job that comes along that meets very little of our criteria, often money. Would you be willing to spend the next three to five years with a mate just because you had one nice meal? Of course not. But that's exactly what we do when we're deciding on our next job – we have a couple of great interviews and the money's good, so we agree to join the company and then stay until a better one comes along. Where's the passion in this picture? I say, it's time to have a love affair with your next job! employee
The good news is that this is easier than you think. Just remember what AFFAIR stands for:
  • A -- Admiration -- Love Your Work
  • FF -- Faking Fails -- If You Fake Who You Are, You'll Be Miserable in Your Next Job
  • A -- Acceptance -- What Are You Willing to Compromise?
  • I -- Intermingling -- Interviewing Not Just Any Company, But the Cream of the Crop Companies
  • R -- Reward -- A Job You Love and Pays the Bills
ADMIRATION. We often have an idea of what our ideal mate looks like. Hair texture and color, eye color, physique, the sound of his or her voice. Likewise, this is the first step to take when you search for your next job. That's why magazines often promote the top companies to work for -- these are companies that people admire. What kind of employer do you admire? Think about the job environment. Do you want to aspire to a window office, or do you prefer open environments where everyone's equally accessible?
Think about the perfect boss who is dying to have you work on interesting projects and promote you at every opportunity. Think about the colleagues you're working with and how you might realistically interact with them at networking events. Can you see yourself bowling with them, or perhaps having each other's families over for dinner? Visualize yourself in the office kitchen at 3pm in the afternoon singing "Happy Birthday" with your colleagues. Who do you want to be singing with? Imagining your ideal job in great detail puts your intention into motion.
FAKING FAILS. Be yourself – otherwise once you get the job you'll just have to keep on faking. Have you heard of anyone who sent out over 200 resumes in their job search? Are you one of them? As in dating, it is highly unattractive to solicit yourself to every available employer and then call for days on end asking if they love you and want to marry you, figuratively speaking. Be a little choosy here. Employers want to know you're a good catch. How can you be selective?
Well, you can reach out to your friends, family, and trusted colleagues. Have a hobby you love? Join a group. Volunteer for a cause you believe in. Join networking groups in your area of expertise and volunteer for those activities that sound fun, even if they add a bit more time to your schedule. The key here is to do only those things that you absolutely love. If you're joining just to get noticed, you've missed the point. Just as in dating, you're more likely to meet your potential mate, or employer, when you're simply being yourself and having fun!
ACCEPTANCE. Now here's the kicker. Be willing to accept less than perfection. I know, this goes against the first "A for Admiration" in designing your ideal employer. But really, do you know of anyone who has the perfect significant other? With dating, you can love someone and be willing to compromise on shortcomings. It's the same with a potential employer. Know your core values and beliefs so that you're clear in your interviews what you must have and what you're willing to let slide.
Let's say you're interviewing to work in an advertising agency and you're a creative person who loves flexibility and wants a boss who provides lots of autonomy but is accessible for brainstorming when you're in a rut. Let's say you crave open space with ping pong tables and dart boards in a creative war room environment. But let's say that this agency's clients are predominantly traditional corporations with organizational hierarchies, long approval processes, micromanagement of details, and slow to act.
Are you willing to accept those shortcomings? Or are you really looking to work for a smaller boutique agency with a lesser-known client roster and possibly less salary potential? These are the types of considerations that if you decide in advance, will not be surprising to you after the new job honeymoon is over.
Congratulations…now you're INTERMINGLING! Over the past few months you've been joining groups and meeting people and having the time of your life. Now you've even gotten yourself some very interesting interviews. Not just any company, but companies that people you trust have referred you to. And you have an "in" since these people know and love you, and are essentially setting you up on blind dates, or interviews – telling both sides that you guys are meant to be soul mates together.
Try not to go crazy memorizing all those interviewing questions. The good companies don't rely on such trite questions such as, "If you were an animal, what kind of animal you would be?" Or the completely unrealistic one, "So where do you see yourself in five years?" As if any company would be willing to sign you on for five years without the possibility of layoffs.
Again, think of the interviewing process as a night out on a date, so to speak. How does your gut feel as you're talking with your interviewer? Is this somebody you'd want to go out with day after day? Is it easy for you to strike up a conversation with the interviewer? Do you find you're stumbling upon your words, or worse, that you're completely bored? Is she or he really listening to what you're saying by repeating back to you what you've said? Better yet, do you feel like a couple of good friends laughing and having a great time? Really try to use the cues your body is sending you -- try not to think so much with your head. Are you in love with this person? Let's hope so, because you'll be spending more time with him or her than with your significant other! job vacancy indonesia

What Employers Are Looking For In You

One of the most dramatic changes in the 21st Century job market is in the way employers consider you when they first lay eyes on you.
For example, if you think that it’s your resume that will get you a job, you’re in for a long, LONG job search! vacancy
Or if you’re intent on proving yourself based on your work history . . . what you used to do for someone else . . . get ready for disappointment and rejection.
And if your confidence is based on your ability to passively answer all the questions an interviewer throws at you, you already lost.
Today’s employers are looking for people with energy. And they pick up on your energy before they even formally meet you. Do you exhibit the energy employers are looking for? employee
Energetic people exude vigor, enthusiasm and drive. They want and need to be active. Employers can sense this quality in a person almost as soon as they enter the room. They have a spring in their step and a drive that puts a sparkle in their eyes.
All this occurs even before you open your mouth. We know from experience that an employer or interviewer will make a go/no-go decision about you in a matter of seconds all based on the sense of energy you communicate when they first lay eyes on you.
So, if you are not this type of person, it would be wise to practice how to look and act energetically so that you can make a good first impression. It really makes a big difference because job opportunities are literally won or lost depending on how you enter a room.
Being aware of employers’ expectations is critical to your job search success. The old-fashioned job hunting techniques focused all the attention on YOU . . . your work history, your past accomplishments, your academic and other credentials, your qualifications, your objectives.
But all that’s changed. Today employers expect you to know what THEIR needs are and how you can fill them going forward. Displaying energy is the first step. job vacancy indonesia

Career Advancement: Are You Ready To Be Promoted?

Promotion is one of those things almost everyone wants after a successful job search. But no one is bold enough to ask for it.
If you’re determined to get ahead after a successful job search and are willing to follow some simple steps, you can move the odds of a promotion significantly in your favor. vacancy
1. Under NO circumstances do you ever ask for a promotion!
2. Get yourself a mentor. Someone a level or two above you that you feel comfortable with . . . with whom you can talk and get advice.
3. Determine the factors that go into promotions where you work. For example, does your boss select people he/she feels comfortable with -- that they hangs out with? Or do they base decisions based solely on performance? You need to develop that skills that match up with your boss’ expectations. employee
3. Let your boss know you have more to offer. For example during a performance review you can ask, "What more can I do for the organization." Or "What more can I do to make myself more valuable?"
4. Write down a list of your accomplishments. Be very precise and use quantifiable results. Then give the list to your boss for review in advance of your performance review.
5. Tell your boss you’re looking for further training, e.g. a computer course or specialty seminar. Send an unspoken message that you’re interested in moving up the ladder.
6. Get involved in civic or philanthropic activities supported by those at the top of your organization.
7. Show your initiative by recommending new ideas or projects. Send a message to your boss that you have something more of value to offer.
8. Look for ways to make a contribution by volunteering your extra time, e.g. after work hours.
Any guarantee that if you do all these things you’ll get a promotion? No. As you already know, there are no guarantees. But if you’re serious about getting ahead, follow these steps and you can dramatically move the odds in your favor.  job vacancy indonesia

10 Ways To Use Speaking to Further Your Career Goals

Professional speaking is one of the easiest ways to enhance your career. Opportunities abound; no matter how experienced or inexperienced. The more you speak the better you will become. You will establish a reputation as someone knowledgeable in your field and people will contact you for speaking opportunities as a result.
 job vacancy indonesia
Everyone has to start somewhere. Here are 10 ways learning to be a speaker can enhance your career.
1. When you speak you automatically assume the role of an expert. People are coming to hear what you say, right? That routinely positions you in the role of an expert. The more credentials you add to your "expert" status the more valuable you become.
2. Speakers get high profile visibility. Look to get your name included in programs, brochures, email announcements, agendas and other handouts, press announcements and online posting of conference materials. This is especially important when you are starting out and are not being paid. Ask up front what type of PR they will be doing for the event. NOTE: Pay attention to important submission deadlines.
. As a speaker, you get to meet other colleagues and associates. It?s a place where you can chat up your competition without any repercussions. Look to see who's on the agenda and make sure to meet as many other speakers as you can. Ask them to keep you in mind at other events where they might be speaking.
4. Speaking can open doors to people you want to meet. It?s easy to pick up the phone and ask someone to come to your event or send them an email invitation. Even if they can't attend it will position you as someone of note. It?s also a great way to follow up with a copy of your name in print as an expert on the program.
5. The media looks for speakers at conferences and events as potential interviews. Make a point of introducing yourself to the media. It gives you an excellent way to follow up for future conversations. Add the media to your master press list and send them announcement any time you are speaking. Note: employee Don't just blast a boring announcement. Spice it up with some clever opening subject line.
6. Speaking enables you to come back with report on other events and activities. Make sure you listen to the other speakers not only as a benchmark to your expertise but to learn something new. If you are an employee, be sure and follow up your presentation with a report to your boss. Send a note to associates on anything you found of interest.
7. Often you can attend other sessions free of charge. Take advantage of this opportunity. Some times conferences are running concurrent tracts. Maximize your time there.
8. As a speaker you get face time with executives that you may not any other way. The higher the level of conference, the higher the level of attendee. You may use this as a vehicle to meet someone you have been trying to track down. Note: After is better than before. Also use the networking sessions which are commonplace to work the attendees and speakers
9. Recruiters are always on the lookout for high profile candidates. If you are in the market for a job, this is an excellent way to have the best jobs (through a recruiter) seek you out. It showcases your expertise in the best possible way. Don't be surprised when colleagues call you because they have seen your name showcased in print.
10. Look for an angle to market yourself for free exposure. If there is no money form the engagement, look for other ways to make up for it: a free booth, a place to sell your stuff, additional days at the hotel at the staff rate, discounts for attendees.
Remember, no matter what the opportunity look for the way to spin the exposure to showcase yourself in the best light possible.

Your Most Important Asset

When you're looking to get hired or get promoted, what do you think is your most important asset? Your experience? Knowledge? Skill? Talent?
While all of those are advantages that will help you achieve your goals, there's one thing that's more important than all of them combined.
Your attitude!
I attended a board meeting recently. It should've been spelled "bored." Just about everyone's eyes were glazed over or nearly closed with fatigue as one dull presentation after another was foisted upon the board members, staff and audience.
Then something changed.
Someone who had never spoken at a board meeting before got up, went to the lectern, fired up her PowerPoint presentation, and totally blew everyone away!
People perked up in their seats and listened attentively to her every word.
When she was done, people clapped! (If you've ever attended a public agency board meeting before, you'll know how remarkable that is!) The board president said, "I've seen hundreds of presentations. This is the first time I've ever seen one that elicited applause!"
Was this presenter more experienced, more knowledgeable, more skilled or more talented than all the others? Absolutely not. As a fairly new employee, she was actually inferior in all of those areas.
What made the difference? Her attitude.  >vacancy
She was enthusiastic, positive, upbeat, energetic and truly excited about what she was talking about!
It wasn't the quality of her presentation that impressed people, it was how she made them feel. Her enthusiasm was contagious, so the audience greatly enjoyed listening to facts and figures that, presented by someone without her energetic attitude, would've bored them to tears.
Everyone in that room will remember and think very highly of her--not the more experienced, knowledgeable, skilled or talented presenters--because of her attitude.
You know why companies conduct time-consuming, labor-intensive job interviews instead of simply hiring people based on the qualifications presented in their resumes? One of the reasons is to find someone they'll enjoy working with.
This can only be conveyed in person, by your attitude.
Think of your own co-workers. Who do you enjoy working with? The smart guy who has all the answers but acts superior? The woman who has the most experience but whines or complains whenever she's asked to do something in a new way?
Or the person who always smiles, listens to you, stays positive, friendly and supportive no matter what? > employee

What To Do When Your Boss Is a Jerk

I've never worked for a boss I didn't like or respect. Sure, some were better than others, but I never considered quitting my job because of a bad boss. Unfortunately, many employees aren't so lucky.
If your boss is a total jerk, someone you'll never get along with, admire or respect no matter how hard you try, there are a few things you can do.
Wait. Is your boss close to retirement or promotion--or even better--termination? If so, try to bide your time and wait until that happy event happens.
Bite your tongue. Keeping anger and frustration bottled up inside is not healthy, but neither is complaining about your boss at work. So if your family can tolerate it, vent at home instead. It'll make you feel better even if it does nothing to help your situation. It may be tempting to complain about your boss at work, especially if coworkers are talking about the same problems. But resist that temptation! If your boss finds out that you are complaining about him, he'll have a legitimate reason to take appropriate action against you and make your life under him worse than it already is.
Continue to work hard. Regardless of how your boss treats you, it's in your best self-interest to continue doing your job to the best of your ability. Stay focused and think about how your efforts are helping the company as a whole. If you do a good job, you may get noticed by your boss's colleagues or even his superiors. Maybe a better opportunity will arise.
>vacancy

Try to improve your relationship. If your boss is a complete jerk, this may be impossible no matter what you do. But if he's only a partial jerk, perhaps it would be worth your time to try to make the situation better. After all, this person may have control over your advancement up the career ladder. And while quitting may seem to be the easiest thing to do, searching for another job, having to explain why you left your last one, and struggling to get a decent reference from an ex-jerk-boss may make leaving a difficult option for you. Instead, swallow your pride and try to understand your boss's management style and personality and adapt yourself to that. For instance, if he's a micromanager, give him constant updates and details on what you're doing (even if you think it's a waste of your time and he should just trust you to do your job).
Effective communication is very important, and it works both ways. If your boss is unclear in telling you what he wants, ask questions until you know exactly what's expected. During performance evaluations or one-on-one discussions, ask him what you can do to meet his expectations.
Go over your boss's head. This is rarely a good idea. But if you've tried everything else, and you feel that your boss is making serious mistakes that affect the company (and not just you), consider talking to his superior. If you take this route, be prepared with specific examples and proof, not just accusations. And realize that this tactic may backfire on you (especially if your boss's boss is also a jerk).

Roustabout Jobs - Tell Me More

By Monika Nolte

                       and Share

With the demand for oil and gas increasing in the world, the industry is expanding their operations and with technology making ever more possible the exploration and extraction of hard-to-get-at oil and gas, jobs, too, are expanding for people with various degrees and even for those with no degree. The first rung of the ladder is usually the roustabout so in this article, we will discuss what the job is all about and what you need to get hired for roustabout jobs.

The expansion of the oil and gas industries as well as the alternative energy sector such as wind farms, makes this the perfect time to try your hand at the entry level roustabout jobs. Yes, the roustabout is the one who does all the dirty jobs necessary to support everyone else working on an oil drilling platform. He takes the supplies off the boats and stows them, he does the scraping and painting of the equipment, deck and work areas, he does the stacking of the pipes for the drilling, he deals with the drilling mud and may even repair the mud pumps. His is a physically demanding job, with lots of lifting, bending and working at heights while dealing with heavy equipment, often in severe weather conditions (depending on the location). He will be working long hours, seven days a week but he gets very well rewarded for what could be called a 'hard grind'. However for someone with just a high school diploma and no experience, the roustabout's job is one way to earn lots of money and enjoy lots of free time as well.

We mentioned the type of work the roustabout does for his 12 hours shifts. The twelve hours off can be spent in the recreational areas as well as sleeping or eating in the crew quarters and canteens. He is likely to have to work those shifts from 2 to 4 weeks at a time, followed by the same amount of time off. Depending on where in the world the roustabout is located, that much time off means he could go home or go travelling.

A roustabout can earn anywhere from $20K to $30K a year as his starting salary. As he progresses up the promotions ladder, his salary could go as high as $50K. In some areas where labour is in short supply like the oil sands fields of Alberta, Canada, earnings can be even higher. Besides the wages, the benefits include full medical and dental, paid room and board while on the rig and very generous retirement pension contributions. Some companies will also give the roustabout an allowance for travelling to and from the heliports used to ferry crew to and from the oil rigs.

What qualities does the person (usually male over the age of 18), have to have to become a roustabout? He has to be in very good mental and physical condition, enjoy physical work and working outdoors sometimes working at heights, be willing to learn and work as part of a team and have the right attitude to safety and work in general. It also helps if doesn't mind being away from home.

To enter this industry, you need to be at least 18 years old, physically and mentally fit and fluent in English. You will have to pass a medical relevant to working offshore, plus follow the rules each country has for having the necessary work permits and training certification.

Electro-Mechanical Engineers

The electro-mechanical branch of engineering includes subjects on analysis, design, manufacture and maintenance of equipment or products which have a combination of electrical/electronic and mechanical systems. On becoming experienced engineers, they develop expertise in both the electrical and mechanical engineering. The subject is a mix or interface of the mechanical equipment and its electronic controls. The Graduates in this science can work in a variety of places including the new product development, applied research or any other entrepreneurial efforts. You can find engineers working for designing and building everything from simple bottling machines to high tech satellites and even very delicate medical equipments.

The overall employment of mechanical engineers is expected to grow same as the average for all other occupations. Individuals planning and interested in such kind of engineering specialization as there career have several training options available to them. These engineers get trained at technical institutes, community colleges, divisions of colleges and universities and at public and private vocational-technical schools. Most of the employers prefer to hire engineering technicians who have an associate degree or any other post secondary training in engineering technology. Having a combined knowledge of mechanical engineering technology and electrical/ electronic circuits these engineers also work in manufacture of computer-controlled mechanical systems like robotic assembly machines. They even operate such machines in factories and other work sites. Their work overlaps that of electrical/ electronic engineering technicians and mechanical engineering technicians at most of the places. However most of these engineering technicians work for the computer and office machines industries.

The studies and curriculum of electro-mechanical engineers focus on areas like computerized instrumentation, data acquisition and electrical control systems in electrical and things like fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat power and dynamics on the mechanical side. They also work on developing automated industrial systems through artificial intelligence, graphical user interface and various other electro-mechanical systems designs. These also work as customer engineers who service computers and other electro-mechanical equipment in the industries. You can even graduate as an electromechanical engineering technician diploma and join the workforce.

The electro-mechanical engineers get to understand electromechanical systems in a variety of fields and have an opportunity to work as a technologist, field service representative, research/ development technologist and equipment maintenance or repair representative in many big companies and firms.

Safely Transition Into Your New Opportunity

Hooray! Hope your new opportunity with, more money, new people, new location, and better benefits yes baby. Signing on to a new job can be stressful and exciting both at the same time. The word gets out to your current co-workers that you are leaving and the questions pile up. Your going to have to CYA (cover your ass) to successfully transition out of your current job without usage of friendly fire or enemy fire.

Giving the proper notice, when you accept your new offer-letter the new company usually once you to start within 2 weeks. If the new company wants you to start right away because of some training program you need to enroll into beware that your current job wants to download all the information in your head that is not already on paper. You know the projects that only you know the details. Could projects now be in jeopardy and if you leave early, your company sees this as you smacking them in the face (Ouch).

Write a resignation letter that explains in detail when your last day will be and how much you appreciate the learning experience you have encountered.

Emotions are everywhere! Your emotions, coworkers, vendors, security guards, even the janitor knows you by first name. Everyone fills you with feedback and asking tons of questions. Most of these feelings will be positive but some will be negative. Coworkers can be jealous, the old "Nothing Personal" but "I hate you for leaving before me, or can you take me with you, help."

Keep a level head because you do not want to burn any bridges just in case you current company opens up a position they should have had while you were there. Play the "Murphy's Law" game and expect the unexpected, again do not crap on your desk as you out-process. The environment that made you want to leave could turn for the better and the enticement to come back good is strong.

Prepare documents that will help your replacement. Clean out your desk with all your belongings with quickness, even if you have to stay late to do it. Too many things popup out of know where your last few days so get things done early. How many days will you need to take off before starting on your new job?

Turn in all items of value such as BlackBerry's, laptops, thump drives, and portable hard drives. Make sure to get a receipt. When you leave, you do not want any misconceptions that you may have taken something with you that needed to turn over to your replacement.

Your last check should not be a surprise to you. Did you receive any corporate training? Were you negative vacation and sick? If you received training, some companies prorate meaning you only owe based on the timeframe that has passed within one-year period. If you were negation vacation or sick, you had better believe it would affect your last check.

Thank-you-letter expresses your deepest appreciation for those who have helped you to become successful. You never know when a new opportunity might open up that makes you smile and you want to return to the same company you just left.

Exit interviews may not be mandatory, but whatever you do please do not trash your company, on the way out the door. Think about leaving on good terms. A good reference is worth it.

Will your manager counter offer to keep you around? Do you really have an option to return someday if your current situation just does not work out? Everyone has at least one nightmare transition story.

What kind of relationship do you have with your boss? Does your boss want you to be successful? Does the boss see you in the positive or negative? People that please their boss are the ones that get promotions, raises, and other rewards. Every Boss has an A-Team. Are you on the A-Team?

What exactly is it that supervisors/bosses want? Below are a several suggestions that have been through the trial and error test.

1. Understand your work place expectations. Know your job description. You should know what the critical success factors are for you and the team you work with. If you don't know ask. Provide recommendations on how your team could be more successful.

2. Readily accept opportunities. Be prepared for the opportunity to learn something new without hesitation. The more knowledge and skills you have the more valuable you become. The more knowledge and skills you have the quicker you can get on the ladder to growth.

3. Always be punctual. If you are always on time, you are showing a sense of pride and caring for your work and it sets the pace that you are in the game. Your boss will know that you are a professional and have respect. Coming in early when needed shows commitment to success as well as staying late to complete an important task.

4. Give it your best. Come to work ready to be productive. If you are not well, rested mistakes are bound to occur, and occur with frequency. Get off the bench and make things happen. Do not fumble the ball when it's your time to make a big plan.

5. Support. Support the strategic goals that your boss is have to promote. Your boss will appreciate you wanting to understand and will see you as an ally as well as someone who needs to be mentored with more structure.

6. Structure. Understand your chain of command. Don't be afraid to greet your boss's boss. Ask questions to reveal a company's dos and don'ts. Good supervisors/manager should always choose someone for succession training, could it be you.

7. Honesty. Everyone values someone they can trust. Sometimes your boss will ask questions to analyze a situation, be honest because based on your decision he could make the wrong course of action. Tell the truth even if it isn't flattering to you. Your integrity could help your boss fix a negative situation quickly so collateral damage is at a minimum.

8. Problem Solver. Everyone loves a problem solver, whether you are a computer doctor or an HR Guru facilitating office problems as well as technical situations. Problem solvers usually see the big picture and negotiate very well. Every office has a problem solver and he/she may not be in a position of authority. Problem solvers are well respected throughout the organization.

9. Negative talk & gossip. Supervisors and managers look for gossip as an opportunity to provide training or hold a meeting to provide insight into situations. It doesn't matter whom the source is fix the problem with correct information for the good of the team.

10. Communication. Every boss has a preferred method of communication, sometimes it is in person, email, or voicemail. Does your Boss respond quickly by e-mail, but voicemail calls are checked twice a day. Some employees use MS Communicator to converse throughout the day. The problem with MS Communicator is you need the paper trail.

11. Positive Feedback. Provide feedback to other employees about what you know about your boss. Make sure employees as well as others know that your boss is making a difference and is working behind the scenes at moving the organization forward. You are now encouraging others to respond to your boss in a positive light.

So what do you think? Can you make the boss happy without sucking up, sure you can? Can you picture yourself moving up the corporate ladder, you better? What is the biggest change you could make from this list that will influence you considerable?

Are You the New Manager Or Supervisor?

By Curtis Valentine

Bookmark and Share

Are you the new manager or supervisor? This new experience can be extremely stressful. Most companies do not provide any type of training when making a move to promote. You know you received a promotion based on your technical expertise, not because of your managerial skills. Everyone now sees you as the person who makes decisions and should have all the right answers. How quickly can you understand, rules, policies, and guidelines? Guidelines and policies are in place to help you navigate through the day-to-day positives and negatives.

Understand your co-workers that you considered your friends may not handle your new role as well as you would have liked? Will upper management except your management style that has yet to be developed? Have you ever made the comment "if I were in charge things would be different"? Will corporate politics derail your great ideas on changing your environment for the better? Everyone in management has gone through the transition from individual contributor to team leader/manager and people find their own way to "survive." The following suggestions will help you keep your perspective and your health to get you started.

1. Monitor your work hours

Monitoring your work hours will be easy to do, because when you work late you realize decisions that have to be made, such as, are you eating dinner at home or should you stop what your doing and get something to eat so you can continue working? You should estimate the hours you think you will need to work late. If you do not need to stay after hours that is great, but if you do set limits and stick to them. Even if you are lucky enough that you can take advantage of new technology such as a secure token or some sort of remote login to your network, remember the number of hours you work over-time can have a burn out effect.

2. Recognize signs of stress

Recognize signs of stress quickly. Everyone stresses out in different ways. Some people are quiet when stressed, others have "blow ups.'' Be aware if your home life starts changing, family and friends should gauge if your personality is changing. Are you distancing yourself from close friends and family because you worked late? Some people get very forgetful or lose concentration, and can be short-tempered. Know your signs of stress.

3. Mentor or a Coach

Make sure you have a mentor or a coach, this will be important to keep you moving in the right direction. There are many undocumented rules of behavior or corporate do's and don'ts you will need to hurdle over while you build your momentum. Your manager will be the first place to turn until you can build your networking skills to find a career mentor. Having lunch with managers from other departments is always a great way to get insight into the happenings around you.
4. Learn to delegate Delegating is giving others the responsibility and authority to carry out tasks. You maintain the accountability to get them done, but you let others decide how they will carry out the tasks themselves. Delegation is a skill to learn. Start learning it.

5. Communicate Communicate, communicate, communicate, cannot be said enough. Ninety percent of what you do should be communicating upward, downward, and sideways. You should hold regular meetings with your staff. The reactive approach is to meet just when new information is available or there is a fire to put out. The proactive approach is to meet with employees regardless. The idea is to build relationships and to prevent fires from occurring. There is always something to communicate, even if to say that things are going well.

6. Incidents & Problems

Based on the number of employees you have you could spend everyday dealing with employees who abuse time and attendance, missed deadlines, employee family emergencies, performance problems, team chemistry issues. You will have to learn through time or through your mentor on how to respond to the numerous situations that can occur through out the week. Should you wear the "Fire Hat" or the "Police Hat," each day, each hour it can be the opposite extremes. As you move forward with experience, you quit responding to the incident and instead respond to the problem that caused the incident. You learn basic skills in conflict resolution with employees, your manager, as well as with sub-contractors/vendors.

7. Ask for training Senior management should understand your need to receive training for career development. You know your employees need training as well. What kind of job training programs does the company offer? Who makes the decision? How much is in the budget for training? What is your training philosophy? Should you make sure your employees are more effective in their present jobs or help to prepare them for the future?

8. Recognize accomplishments Organizational culture is design to reward problem solvers or the person with the highest sales in a department. Make sure to reward those unsung hero's who perform outstanding work behind the scenes. Definitely acknowledge accomplishments, if only by having a good laugh by the coffee machine, monetary company bonuses, and communicate thank you notes to your people by e-mail. Doing simple things to let your people know you care. Give out movie tickets or restaurant gift certificates, these work very well when you need to give on the spot recognition. Lunch can be a rewarding experience.

Most important, you must understand that management is a process, you never really complete your "things-to-do" list. With experience, you will learn to relax and let autopilot engage. If you have ever complained about management now is your chance to make sure that learning happens and that productivity and morale are improved. You are the future. Good Luck to you!

Career Advice: Four Secrets to Creating Successful Job Opportunities

By Ed Sykes

Soon after I graduated from college, I moved to New York City to find fame and fortune. I was in a great relationship, found a great job working in Manhattan and I was feeling on top of the world. I was going places!

I applied for job after job with no results. My money was running low and my rent was due. I didn't know what to do. Down to my last bit of cash, I had to go to the bank to get money to eat that night. I put on my winter coat, gloves, and boots and walked three miles in the cold to my local bank. At that time in the early 1980s, most banks didn't have ATMs so I had to go inside to a teller.

As my hands began to thaw, I went to the table to write a check for fifty cents. I dreaded waiting on line for the teller to serve me. As I inched forward in the line, I broke into a cold sweat in anticipation of interacting with the teller over a measly sum.

When my time came, I looked the teller in the eye and handed her the check. She looked at the check then looked at me. With a slight hesitation, she asked, "How would you like your fifty cents?" When she asked that question, I thought the whole world could hear her words.
That night as I sat alone at my kitchen table eating chicken noodle soup I thought it couldn't get any worse. I could have given up at this point, packed my bags, and went back home to a nice comfortable environment. But I knew I was better than the difficult situation I was in.

As I held onto positive thoughts, I looked up at the job classifieds in the paper. My new opportunity called to me: a listing for an entry-level position in the corporate technical training industry. This excited me since my family came from an educational background.

The next day I called and received a job interview. I got the job, and over twenty years later I am still empowering organizations and people to improve their situations. Whether you are in the middle of a job search or looking for a new position, adding the P-I-N-E principles will help you achieve your goals:

Patience is the Key to Success. Develop the courage to be patient when seeking job opportunities. When you are impatient you are more willing to accept job opportunities that will get in the way of your true calling. Develop clear career goals that will steer you to the job or promotion you want. Think of the following quote when you are seeking job opportunities or promotions:

"Never think that God's delays are God's denials. Hold on; hold fast; hold out. Patience is genius." - George-Louis Leclerc de Buffon

It may be against monumental challenge, but hold on for the job opportunity or promotion you really want.

Innovation is the Key to Success. Take the time to be innovative and stand out from the crowd. Recently a friend lost his job of fourteen years and was out of work for a week. He used innovation to get another job. He sent his resume with a giant chocolate chip cookie that had "Hire Me" written on it to prospective employers. He was hired within the week and has since informed me that he has received two even more lucrative job offers in the meantime.

Seek to provide solutions to prospective employer. No matter the economy, employers are always looking for people who can make money, save money, make them more competitive, and enhance their organization in any way.

Stand out from your competition by "taking the path less traveled" and being creative in your search. Another friend wanted to work for a company but they had no openings. She researched the company and approached them by creating a new position that would make the company more money in another marketplace. Not only was she hired, the company created a new department based on my friend's research and made her manager of the department.

Networking is the key to Success - "Cast your net" and make yourself and your skills known to the people who can make decisions on your career. This will help you cut the success curve in half because decision makers will be quick to hire or promote people they know, trust, and have confidence in doing the job.

Along with networking at association meetings, another powerful method of networking is volunteering with your company and outside of your company. By volunteering, new people both inside outside your company will see your skill.

Enthusiasm is the key to Success - Most importantly, bring a positive attitude to any career opportunity. Let the decision makers see the how excited you are about the job opportunity and communicate how you can make a difference.

I know your job situation may be challenging to say the least. Make sure you protect your enthusiasm and positive mindset so that you can overcome those challenging moments. Concentrate on the big picture and your career goals. Focus on these goals morning, noon, and night so that you have a crystal clear concept of what you want to accomplish.
"Energy and persistence conquer all things." - Benjamin Franklin
Let your enthusiasm sell you!
Follow these four techniques whether you are job searching or looking to be more successful at your present job. These career secrets are guaranteed to help you create more success in your career, your life, and your community.

5 Skills You Need to Have to Get an Internship in Minor League Baseball

By Matt Berthiaume

Minor League baseball can get very competitive when trying to land that big internship. There will be certain skills required by different teams and organizations in order to be successful in the Sport Management field. From my experience applying to different sport organizations, they will ask you to give them specific examples of real life situations you have been in. This is for them to see if you can put these skills you say you have to use.

The first and most important skill you need to have for a Minor League baseball Internship is communication. This goes for any internship you choose to pursue, but within Minor League baseball you need to be able to to communicate with potential clients such as: sponsors, players, agents, and other staff within the organization. If you have a problem with communicating in a professional manner, an internship in the Sport Management field might not a good fit for you. You must communicate with confidence, and know what you are talking about. Communication skills are not just verbal, you also need to know how to write well, and professionally. Never use slang in both verbal and written communication. Remember you are not talking your friend, you are talking to your potential boss.

Being computer literate is very important, because technology just keeps growing. Computers run everything within this business. Knowing how to use Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, is a great skill to have. Spreadsheets are used in every business not just Minor League baseball. You would be using a spreadsheet to keep track of data, such as player stats, and database of certain contacts. Also, know how to use MS Word, to type up different documents when needed.

Ability to work as part of a team. This is a big skill to have when applying for internships, because you more than likely be teamed up with other interns to do specific tasks the General Manager, or internship coordinator asks you to do. This will also follow after the internship phase, and when you apply for an actual job. Teamwork is required in about everything you do in the work force, no matter what position you are applying for.

Customer service skills are a vital skill to have when applying for internships. This is what you do all day long, cold calling consumers, and trying to sell them what the organization has to offer. This is especially true when getting into a marketing type of internships. Everyday you deal with various clients that have different needs and wants. Being able to provide great customer service will make those clients do business with you again.

Multi-tasking is an essential skill to have in order to get work done and on time. When interning, your boss will not want you to continue to ask them what the next task is to do. You will be required to do multiple tasks at once without a problem, and also expected to do a levy of duties throughout the day. Being able to multi-task will make it easier to do the various tasks throughout the day your boss will ask of you.

The Need for Employee Development Plans

By Alex F Gray

Bookmark and Share

Employee development plans are essential for the success of employees. A company's goals will be clearly mentioned in the plan that has to be matched to the employee's expectations. The plan will also lay out the different tasks, goals and actions that are very important for the success of the worker to take him/her to the next level.

Some of the various steps involved in the development plan are preparing the employee, providing development opportunities, monitoring the progress and creating confidence. There are several reasons for creating such plans. Some of them are described below.

The employee development plan is a means of empowerment. When the employee understands the goals, they will be more focused, understand the road to success clearly and will have a natural urge to perform to the best of their ability. They may not require any kind of motivation or direction from others. The empowerment will greatly enhance the overall performance of the member of staff. The plan is also meant for coaching an employee and moulding him/her so that the company has a successful environment. Some companies also provide the employees with special coaching forums for providing real time feedback.

When an employee receives proper coaching, they will be able to perform as per the requirements of the company and even better. It is also very important to look at the positive aspects and boost those areas. Some people may also require coaching in certain areas. Such issues can be easily dealt with in a one-to-one meeting where the feedback can be given in person along with different solutions to improve. One of the most important needs for the creation of the employee development plans is to retain the employee. The average cost to replace and employee could be about 1/3rd of the previous salary of the person. Such unnecessary expenditure can be avoided by retaining the workforce especially, a well trained one.

As the foundations of a company are built on their staff, creating a successful workforce is fundamentally about creating success through effective management. Not only do employee development plans pave the way for career advancement for the individual, but the entire organization will also benefit as it transitions from good to better to best. Although input is taken from both management and the human resources departments, the success of the employee development plan ultimately depend on how the individual responds to it.

6 Places to Go to Find Your Next Job

By Sanat Deepa

In this post, I would like to share with you the places to go to find jobs online. I'll touch on the pros and cons of each. Before we start, I'd like to stress that not all avenues will work for you - some will be busier than others depending on your line of business. For this reason, it's a good idea to give each of them a try to see which ones work best for you.

1. Job search sites, such as Monster.com

Job search sites should be your first point of call. This is where most recruiters will turn, and where you are likely to find the most job offers. Job search sites come in 2 different forms: generalist sites such as Monster.com, and specialist sites catering to one industry. If you find that generalist sites have too simplistic job titles or categories, a niche job site may be right for you.

2. Job search engines, such as Trovit.com

Job search engines aggregate job offers from multiple job sites. They allow you to search several sites at once. Trovit.com is one of my favourites because it allows you to create custom job alerts around your target keywords. This could save you a huge amount of time with new jobs sent straight to your email inbox.

3. Universal search engines, such as Google.com

Search engines such as Google.com could help expand your job search beyond job search sites. They can return job offers posted on corporate websites that haven't yet been published on job sites. This could be your chance to put your application in ahead of the crowd, as job listings on company websites often get less visibility than postings on job sites.

4. Newspaper sites

Newspaper sites often have a job search section. Visiting 2 to 3 newspaper sites and create job alerts there if you can. Traditional recruiters will often turn to newspaper sites first, over online job sites.

5. Company websites

If you are already set on one specific employer, check their website on a regular basis. Subscribe to their Twitter feed, Facebook fan page and other social media outlets for hiring cues, tip-offs and the latest company news. Try to identify someone within the organization you could contact with a spontaneous application.

6. Social Media sites

Social media sites, such as LinkedIn.com or Twitter.com, have created more opportunities to connect with others. Twitter in particular is a good way to establish a personal connection with a head-hunter or a recruiter prior to sending in your application. You can also use Twitter and LinkedIn to search for jobs rather than contacts, in the same way as you would use a job site. However, the personal connection you can strike on these sites is a powerful force not to be underestimated. It also is how I found my current job at SalarySurvey.in!

Last but not least, create job alerts whenever you can. Job alerts will send new jobs straight to your email Inbox, which could save you a huge amount of time and stress.

By definition, Performance Management refers to a tactical and combined approach which leads to increasing the efficiency of a company by improving the way people work, getting the most out of the team and individual contributions.

Performance management includes certain actions which guarantee that the most important goals of a company are met effectively. Performance management is not restricted to the performance of a particular department, employee or product; it may be a combination of everything on the whole. Performance management is adopted by every organization.

Benefits

When there is a good relation between programs used for performance management and business results, it leads to several benefits. A company can enjoy direct financial gains, growth in sales and lower costs. It brings the organization in alignment with its goals and decreases the time it takes to create strategic changes by communicating the alteration through a new set of goals. It also motivates the workforce by optimizing incentive plans. It creates a level of transparency in achieving the aim, improves management control and is flexible and responsive to management needs. It helps in auditing and compliance. Communication of goals and plans also gets simplified. A clear documentation system gets incorporated. It helps ensure that all the employees are treated equally, as the appraisals are based on the results provided by them. It shifts the focus from activity oriented to result oriented. Performance reviews focus on the contributions that an employee makes towards achieving the company's goals. It is more effective since it is an ongoing process and not a one-time thing.

Effective ways to develop a performance plan

The first step in the strategic planning process is an evaluation of the market. The outcome of this assessment process is known as the mission statement. An organization's goals are its priority. In order to establish them it is important to incorporate strategic planning.

A performance plan helps turn these goals into reality. These goals must be reviewed in terms of quantity, quality, cost or timeliness. Calculate the results. Objectives that cannot be attained should not be formulated. Test these objectives for challenge and achievability. Adjust the objectives to the available resources. Establish performance reports that measure advancement towards the objective. Review all the statements with others to assure consistency and mutual support. Modify your statements to meet changing conditions and priorities. Provide a rational design. It is important to identify the outcome, driving measures and patterns of effects. The evaluation standards should be identified. The goals must be clear, concise, measurable and attainable. A target date for completion must be agreed upon. Document a performance plan which include the desired results, measures and standards and keep a copy of it in your briefcase.

When there is a clear understanding of competitors, customers and suppliers, an evaluation of the company's strengths and weaknesses can be made. Formulate a business plan which helps in determining the possibility of the results required. A well-written business plan helps in identifying the progress a company has made towards achieving its goals and control the decisions later on.

A major portion of employee's performance directly contributes to the results of the organization. The results need to be prioritized. It should be identified how the results were achieved. The most valid, reliable and practical measurements should be used.

Therefore, when a proper performance plan is put into perspective it has several benefits. It helps in career advancements, promotions, progress and success. It is responsible for the growth, development, performance and profit of an organization.
